I was taking a walk today in Irving, TX when I came across a mourning dove (he/she still has some, but not too many, down feathers, so I guess we're talking "teenage" to "young adult") lying out on the sidewalk. At first I thought it was dead, but when I came up to it, I noticed that it was opening and closing its eyes, as well as its mouth (most birds do that around here whenever the weather's too hot, kind of like how dogs "pant.") I called my mom and she said that I could bring it home so we could keep it in a cool environment while we find out where to go from there. So I took it home, and my dad and I set up an old bird cage of ours, and we put it in there (I probably should have mentioned that the dove had some wing problems - I think the scenario was that he broke his wing, and ended up stranded in the middle of all of this Texas heat.) I also put some food and water in there, but he hasn't started to drink yet. (I think he might be very weak - unfortunately, we don't have an eye dropper or syringe handy so that we could give him some water manually.) What should I do from here? (Also, please include some names of wildlife/avian rescues that could be nearby.)... Read More »
